Yes, there were layoffs in field service, but reasons were not given. But the rules are basic. If you have poor performance ratings and/or are in an area that has lost business, you are a good target. And there is a lOT more to the job now than fixing instruments and customers; if you don't do the paperwork, on time and consistent, you're volunteering for an opportunity to be successful somewhere else. Some field service manager positions have been slowly dissappearing as well. The rule of field service now is to make sure you're not on the bottom of the ranking.
